Club of the Year Announced

2009 South Carolina Golf Association – Club of the Year Announced

Columbia, SC - In 1995, the South Carolina Legislature passed a bill designating the last full week of April each year as Golf Week.  This bill was passed in order to create awareness for the legislature, businesses, and the general public, on the statewide economic impact derived from the game of golf.  Each year the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation assumes the role of conducting Golf Week and hosts a number of events supporting the game and focuses on the impact golf has on our state.  South Carolina Golf Week 2009 is scheduled for April 19-25.

The busy Golf Week schedule comes to a climatic announcing of the SCGA Club of the Year on Friday, April 24th. The SCGA is pleased and proud to announce that the 2009 Club of the Year is Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet.  With a renowned Tom Fazio designed layout, the club opened in 1985 and has earned many accolades through various publications as one of the premiere residential courses in the country.   The Club originally initiated a close relationship with the SCGA by hosting the Mid Amateur Championship in both 1986 and 1987.  Wachesaw Plantation Club later hosted the 1989 SCGA Amateur Championship and 2000, 2001 and 2008 Senior 4 Ball Championships.

In 2002 the club agreed to host the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation’s Can – Am Junior Team Matches.  This event has remained at Wachesaw where the membership has stepped forward to support the event financially and the club’s entire staff has cultivated the event from every direction administratively.  This event has grown to provide a first class atmosphere for the junior teams from South Carolina and the Province of Ontario, while the funds generated annually by the membership of Wachesaw Plantation Club go into the Foundation’s scholarship program.

Clubs like Wachesaw Plantation Club are the backbone of the SCGA as we continue to provide golf programs in South Carolina . We applaud the efforts of their membership and staff.
